Marc Ecko's Getting Up Video Game
Video Game published by Atari for PS2, XBOX, PC and Mobile. Developed by The Collective.
Associate Producer: Geno Betancourt
Box art by Brian Mackin
As the associate producer I managed many studios and freelance artists and graffiti writers to produce hundreds of pieces of content and assets to be used in the game: graffiti, character models, in game cut scenes, fake advertising, and music for the sound track and score. One of my biggest duties on the game was to manage and direct the creation of hundreds of graffiti pieces to be used in game, by the protagonist, Train. I worked with dozens of real world graffiti artists to create an arsenal of graffiti options the player can use to tag in the game and that were part of the urban environment. Every level the player beat unlocked another batch of killer pieces for the user to paint in the virtual game world.
In addition to being associate producer, I also did a lot of graphic design, art retouching, illustration and video editing for the game and the massive marketing campaign around it.
Some examples of the graffiti used in the game. Art was submitted by the artists as photos and scans that I had to curate and prep for use in game.
A sell sheet I designed to help promote the game to buyers.
In addition to managing the creation of the games graffiti content, I also created a lot of original pieces own based on the artists we were working with. In addition to many graffiti legends Marc Ecko licensed the use of the Banksey's famous rat stencil to be used as political propaganda in the game. The interesting technical challenge of making graffiti for the game was developing tools and graphic treatments in Photoshop and Illustrator that emulated common graffiti mediums like, aerosol spray, stencils, wheat pastes and marker tags.
The above video clip features a key art asset I created for a rendered 3D animation. The clip is taken from a moment at the very end of the game. The final mission in the game is to install a huge graffiti mural, to be unsuspectingly revealed at a press conference, that exposes the corruption of city mayor (voice acted by Adam West).
The above animation is the very last thing the player sees after beating the game. I created the animation using Flash.
